Part of the reason why I chose to work at Health Canada was to be able to use what I have learned in school and apply it in a setting where I know it is going to help people. What I do is going to impact potentially millions of people.
I started my undergraduate studies in microbiology then I switched paths completely and did a masters degree in bone pathology so after that I worked in research for a while,
I worked in medical editing and medical writing for a little while and right now I am continuing my studies in bone pathology to really become the next bone expert at Health Canada so that I am able to represent Health Canada at international meetings on what are the next best therapies for therapies for osteoporosis and such bone disorders.
The professional development program for biologists or BIDP as we call it, is a program that is targeted towards junior evaluators or junior assessment officers that first start at Health Canada.
To be able to do the job well and with confidence it takes a lot of training there is a lot of mentorship happening under that program and a lot of guidance. How do you actually evaluate the safety and efficacy of the drugs that millions of Canadians take every day. And to be able to do that there is a development program in pace to take you from a beginner to an experienced drug evaluator and at each step of the way there are milestones that you have to meet.
I do feel very lucky to be able to work for Health Canada and all the opportunities that Health Canada has provided for me, not just currently but for my future. And I hope to enjoy a very long and successful career at Health Canada.
