Theresa Schopf - Transcript

One of the things I always say is I don't know what I want to do when I grow up. And I continuously want to move on, learn new things and try out new things. From being a pharmacist I went into the military and then I got an MBA then I started with Health Canada. And where we are now, I am in a management development program and again get the opportunity to network with other colleagues, to go do some course development, leadership development, and try out different assignments within Health Canada.

Originally when I was coming to work in Health Canada I was going to do some reorganization and some help with some organizational building because Health Canada had just undergone a reorganization and a few weeks into that job I was asked to develop some new regulations and so that journey was fantastic.

I did a 6 month acting position in the strategic policy branch and there I got kind of an overview of what Health Canada was about outside of the regulatory world and the drug world.

And then I decided I would join the management development program.

So now I am at a different level which is more management, more getting into higher level decision making, finding out how the government works, how Health Canada works.

And so I will have two more one-year assignments within this program where I will get to work in other areas and learn more about different management styles, learn more about financial aspects or HR or wherever I want to concentrate.

By working in either the Radiation Protection Bureau or where I was in the Office of Controlled Substances I am making an impact on my children's lives, my grandchildren's lives and the lives of others around me and just knowing that every day that what I do will make it safer for the rest of my family.
