Office of Sustainable Development

Consistent with the Government of Canada's commitment to sustainable development, the Office of Sustainable Development promotes sustainable development initiatives across Health Canada.

The role of the Office is to provide guidance in support of integrating environmental, social and economic considerations into Health Canada policies, programs and plans.

The Office is responsible for:

• Coordinating the Department's contribution to the  Federal Sustainable Development Strategy including working with other federal departments to advance shared sustainable development objectives.
• Coordinating the development of and reporting on the departmental Sustainable Development Strategy, including its integration into Health Canada's  Reports on Plans and Priorities and Departmental Performance Report.
• Promoting sustainable development through awareness building and through training to Health Canada employees;
• Promoting the integration of sustainable development principles into policy decision-making and operational planning; and
• Ensuring departmental compliance with the  Cabinet Directive on the Environmental Assessment of Policy, Plan and Program Proposals by providing guidance to its employees on  Strategic Environmental Assessments.
