Acoustics
The Acoustics Division aims to reduce the incidence of noise-induced hearing loss and other non-auditory health effects of noise in Canada. It also helps reduce the risk of injury from unnecessary ultrasound radiation. As part of Health Canada, the Acoustics Division
- provides and implements standards for protection against occupational and environmental noise
- develops measurement methods for use in standards to reduce machinery noise using a state-of-the-art acoustics chamber
- conducts laboratory studies and monitors external research on the biological effects of noise
- generates information on the health effects of noise that can be used by both the public and regulatory authorities for risk management
- provides standards and guidelines for the licensing of medical ultrasound devices
- provides guidance on the safe use of ultrasound in medical, paramedical and commercial and industrial applications
- ensures that Canadians are protected from devices that emit noise and ultrasound under the provisions of the Radiation Emitting Devices Act, Hazardous Products Act, Treasury Board Standards, and a Memorandum of Understanding with the Labour Program of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada
To make an inquiry regarding noise or ultrasound, contact the Consumer and Clinical Radiation Protection Bureau directly.
