Lasers and Electro-Optics

The Lasers and Electro-Optics Division aims to increase aviation safety and reduce risk of injury from laser and broad-band optical radiation in Canada. As part of Health Canada, the Lasers and Electro-Optics Division

  • investigates, communicates, and provides expertise in risk analysis and risk management of laser devices, broad-band optical equipment, and solar radiation
  • promotes sun safety and public awareness of the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation
  • conducts leading-edge research on the biological effects of optical radiation
  • participates in international activities establishing standards
  • develops regulations and monitors compliance under the Radiation Emitting Devices Act for tanning equipment, mercury vapour lamps, and lasers.
