Microbiology Evaluation Division

The Evaluation Division is responsible for evaluating microbial contaminants in foods, identifying their risk to human health, and developing standards and policies to minimize risks related to the consumption of these products. The Division also plays a key role in the pre-market assessment of novel foods.

The Division provides science-based information and advice to consumers to increase their awareness of safe food practices, and to enable them to take appropriate measures to protect their health. You can find information on microbial food safety in the Food-related Illnesses section of the website.

The Microbiology Evaluation Division is divided into three sections:

  1. Policy Development and Methodology Section
  2. Microbial Risk Assessment Section
  3. Novel Foods Section
