Nutrition Evaluation Division

The Division develops the regulations and guidelines under the Food and Drugs Act that deal with the nutritional aspects of foods. These regulations and guidelines address the nutritional quality and safety of foods used by the general public, for instance regarding food fortification and trans fat; nutrition labelling and claims including Nutrition Facts and health claims, and the nutritional quality and safety of special purpose foods for vulnerable groups such as foods for infants, formulated liquid diets, meal replacements and nutritional supplements.

The Division is also responsible for evaluating the nutritional aspects of submissions for new or novel food products, for example food additives, and genetically modified foods and new or novel processes such as food irradiation and for evaluating health and nutritional claims for foods. In addition the Division is responsible for providing advice and information on matters relating to nutrition, food, nutritional composition of foods, and the application of the Food and Drugs Act and Regulations.
