Northern Region
The Northern Region is responsible for all Health Canada activities in Yukon, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. This ensures that Health Canada's activities and interests in the Territories are managed and represented in an integrated manner.
The Region is responsible for:
- Managing the implementation and delivery of Health Canada 's community-based health promotion and illness prevention programs in the territories;
- Integrating and streamlining Health Canada 's health promotion and illness prevention programs planning, management and implementation;
- Managing the delivery of Non-Insured Health Benefits in all three territories;
- Representing, advocating, advising on, and coordinating matters relating to Health Canada 's involvement and role in the territories;
- Participating in the negotiation and implementation of self-government agreements in the territories; and
- Maintaining and strengthening partnerships with territorial governments, First Nations, Inuit and other stakeholders in the territories.
The Region also provides additional support which includes:
- Assuming the lead in policy development regarding health program development and implementation in the territories;
- Participating in inter/intra departmental committees on issues which affect health programs and services in the territories;
- Developing a strategically coordinated approach to the development, adaptation and implementation of health promotion and illness prevention programs and services in the territories; and
- Providing a focal point for all of Health Canada's activities in the territories.
Programs
The current priorities of the Northern Region are:
- Implementation of the Territorial Wellness Framework;
- Accountability and Funding Mechanisms; and
- Coordinating with partners, project capacity building and program sustainability in territorial communities.
The Northern Region is based in Ottawa to support relationships with an office in Whitehorse to support programs in Yukon communities. Please contact us for further information.
