OTTAWA - Health Canada is advising Canadian consumers not to use Omron 3-Way Instant Thermometers with model numbers MC-600 and MC-600CAN due to a potential safety risk that can cause the tip of the thermometer to overheat. The affected products have lot numbers beginning with 01-32, 01-36, 01-37 and 01-38.
The product manufacturer has initiated a voluntary recall in Canada and the United States of the battery-operated digital thermometers, which have a tip that pre-heats before taking a temperature. A malfunction has been identified that may result in the tip being heated to a temperature higher than expected, leading to discomfort and a potential burn during use. There is an increased risk of injury when the product is used on very young children who may be unable to describe the source of pain caused by the use of a malfunctioning product.
Health Canada has received one complaint associated with the use of this product and will continue to monitor the effectiveness of the recall. A limited number of consumer complaints in the U.S. have been received by the manufacturer, Illinois-based Omron Healthcare Inc. Approximately 2,500 of the thermometers being recalled were shipped to Canada and are being sold through drug stores, and the pharmacy sections of food stores and mass merchandise chains. The products are also available from the U.S. through Internet retailers.
Health Canada advises all Canadians who have purchased this product to:
