The zipper pulls are approximately 65 mm (2.5 inches) long and 7 mm (1/4 inch) wide. The pulls are silver in colour with letters that are painted in various colours. Some of the pulls have the names of astrological signs (Sagittarius, Libra, etc.) spelled out in vertical letters, with the appropriate astrological symbol at the bottom of each. Others have words like 'Diva', 'Friend', 'Cute', etc. The zipper pulls were sold attached to narrow cards that have symbols in various colours. Approximately 83,059 of the zipper pulls have been sold through Dollarama stores across Canada. Tests carried out by Health Canada have determined that the total lead content of the zipper pulls is over 90%. Because of their long, narrow shape and the softness of the metal, there is a substantial risk that a piece of the zipper pull might break off and be swallowed if the zipper pull is mouthed.
The cellphone charm is described as a silver charm in the shape of a purse with a handle. The purse has a yellow painted flower in the centre. The cellphone charm is approximately 15 mm (5/8 inch) in diameter. The cellphone charm is attached to a black elastic cord approximately 50 mm (2 inches) long and was sold attached to a bright pink card with a 'Diva' label. Health Canada tests have determined that the total lead content of the cellphone charms is approximately 94%. Approximately 53,720 of these cellphone charms have been sold through Dollarama stores across Canada. The cellphone charm is small enough to be swallowed easily.
The cellphone charms are not classified as children's jewellery. However, because they have a very high lead content, have a design and packaging which would appeal mainly to children, and could be adapted for wear as a charm on a jewellery item, they pose a significant risk of lead exposure to children. For this reason, Dollarama has removed the cellphone charms as well as the zipper pulls from sale.
