Letter to Editor regarding the article "Feds must act on drug supply" (Saskatoon Star Phoenix - March 15, 2012)

2012-35
March 15, 2012
For immediate release

OTTAWA - I am writing to correct an inaccuracy in your March 15 editorial "Feds must act on drug supply". In the editorial you suggest Health Canada is responsible for the fact that Sandoz became the primary supplier of the drugs in shortage.

In fact, there are a number of companies in the country that Health Canada has already approved to produce and supply several of the shortage drugs, including less expensive generics, and this list has been provided to our provincial and territorial counterparts. The fact that Sandoz has become the sole or dominant supplier of these drugs is the result of decisions taken over time by provincial and territorial drug buyers.

Our priority right now is meeting the needs of patients by supporting the search for replacement supply. Health Canada has received and is reviewing submissions for replacement supplies and for emergency access to needed drugs.

Normally Health Canada plans to complete authorizations for similar generic drugs within six months. Health Canada has committed to expediting all phases of the drug review process as much as possible. At the same time we will ensure that safety is not compromised.  The last thing anyone wants is for patients to be harmed by unsafe drugs authorized in a rush to fill supply gaps.
