Notice to the Editors

Health Canada today released the October 2012 issue of the Canadian Adverse Reaction Newsletter (CARN).

This issue includes an article on the limitations with Lyme disease test kits and a reminder to health professionals of the importance of clinical diagnosis and early treatment. The article also encourages reporting of incidents with test kits, including false negative and false positive results.

This edition also includes an article highlighting the continued risks of liver damage associated with antiandrogens used mainly in the treatment of prostate cancer, and a case presentation on an adverse reaction to thalomid treatment.

Health Canada today released the July 2012 issue of the Canadian Adverse Reaction Newsletter (CARN).

This issue includes an article on LigaSure vessel sealing systems and reports of certain LigaSure surgical instruments sticking to tissue or clamping onto tissue but not releasing. LigaSure vessel sealing systems are used during surgery to seal small vessels (such as certain veins and arteries) and tissue, to stop or prevent bleeding.

It also includes the annual adverse reaction and incident reporting statistics for 2011, as well as a quarterly summary of communications to health professionals and the public.

Health Canada today released the April 2012 issue of the Canadian Adverse Reaction Newsletter (CARN).

This edition contains an article on a suspected association between the long-term use of the antibiotic minocycline for the treatment of acne in adolescents and two serious autoimmune disorders: drug-induced lupus erythematosus (a type of lupus), and autoimmune hepatitis (liver inflammation).

It also includes an article on the painkiller fentanyl and a suspected association with "serotonin syndrome" when fentanyl is used in combination with other drugs known as "serotonergic agents" (drugs that induce the release of the chemical serotonin in the brain, such as certain types of antidepressants and anti-migraine drugs). Serotonin syndrome is a potentially life threatening drug reaction involving too much serotonin in the body.

Finally, the issue contains a quarterly summary of communications to health professionals and the public.
