Factsheet: The National Case Management Network Funding

OTTAWA - Parliamentary Secretary of Health Colin Carrie today announced funding for the National Case Management Network (NCMN) to develop a standardized set of skills, knowledge and techniques for case management.

"Case managers are dedicated navigators and advocates who help Canadians and their families achieve better health outcomes by coordinating the care and services they need," said Parliamentary Secretary Carrie. "I'm pleased that the National Case Management Network is taking a leadership role in promoting excellence in case management."

The Government's latest funding commitment will allow the NCMN to begin the second phase of their project called, Promoting Excellence and Professionalism for Case Management in Canada - Core Competencies, Credentialing and Sustainability.  This project will develop a standardized set of skills and knowledge, as well as identify a process for credentials for case management.

"This funding will help NCMN to establish the skills and attitudes required for the role of theCase Management Expert: Communicator, Collaborator, Advocate, Navigator, Manager and Professional. Once added to the Canadian Standards of Practice for Case Management distributed in 2010, this work will inform the Canadian public to what we do and how we do it in order to meet the needs of clients within a complex health, social, and fiscal environment," said Joan Park, President of the National Case Management Network and Case Manager at St. Michael's Hospital.

The NCMN is a federally incorporated non-profit organization dedicated to the support and advancement of case management providers.  It supports the professional development of care workers through education, networking opportunities and the establishment of standards of practice. Under NCMN leadership, case managers across the country and across sectors are also collaborating to bring together evidence and best practices.

Government of Canada funding for this project comes from Health Canada's Health Care Policy Contribution Program (HCPCP) which is designed to support this Government's commitment to improving the health care system. This project also aligns with Health Canada's Health Human Resource Strategy to optimize Canada's health workforce.
