Message from Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health

National Aboriginal Day

June 21, 2010

As Minister of Health and an Aboriginal Canadian, I invite all Canadians of all backgrounds to celebrate the 15th annual National Aboriginal Day.

This day was established in 1996 by then Governor General Roméo Leblanc to celebrate the contributions First Nations, Inuit and Métis have made to Canada. National Aboriginal Day is held every year on June 21, the summer solstice, because both the date and time of year have significance in Aboriginal culture.

Health Canada has a long history of working with Aboriginal communities. Health Canada's First Nations and Inuit Health Branch has partnerships with First Nations and Inuit communities to deliver high-quality health care services. We help improve the health of Canada's Aboriginal peoples by removing barriers to health care and addressing health threats from diseases and ailments to which First Nations and Inuit are often more vulnerable.

Canada's Aboriginal peoples have made significant contributions to the tapestry of this country. Through agricultural advancements, the introduction of unique cultures and traditions, Canada's Aboriginal peoples have helped unify this country.

On behalf of all Aboriginal peoples I would like to invite Canadians to celebrate National Aboriginal Day.
