National Cancer Survivors Day

June 5, 2011

The first Sunday in June is National Cancer Survivors Day. It is an annual "Celebration of Life" for cancer survivors, their friends and families.

It is a day that helps them adjust to the "new normal" that begins when a successful period of treatment ends.

I invite all of you to join survivors, caregivers, health professionals, friends and family to celebrate the lives of all the people around the world who have survived cancer.

In communities across Canada, there will be including parades, carnivals, races, art exhibits, ball games, contest, dances and all kinds of inspirational programs.

Cancer is the leading cause of death among Canadians. But there are ways that we can reduce the risk of developing some forms of cancer. National Cancer Survivors Day can also be an opportunity to adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes physical activity and healthy eating.

To take part in National Cancer Survivors Day activities on June 5th, you can consult a local branch of the Next link will take you to another Web site Canadian Cancer Society and find out about community events taking place near you, or visit the Next link will take you to another Web site National Cancer Survivors Day web site for more information on this celebration.

As we celebrate the inspirational journeys of our survivors, we can learn from their experiences.

I would like to thank those who have organized this year's events and hope that everyone enjoys the festivities, especially every Canadian who is celebrating life after cancer.
