The Government of Canada recognizes that the mental health of all Canadians is central to the health of our society.
We also know that mental illness poses significant financial and emotional burdens on Canadian society, families and individuals. So, we are committed to investing in and promoting positive mental health to help Canadians live longer, healthier lives.
In 2007, the Government invested $130 million over ten years to establish and support the Mental Health Commission of Canada. This funding is for initiatives, such as the development of a national mental health strategy, which is due to be completed by 2012.
We also know that a big part of promoting positive mental health means reducing health disparities among Canadians. The Government is investing in community-based projects across the country that promote positive mental health for children, youth and families.
The World Health Organization says "there is no health without mental health". World Mental Health Day is an opportunity for each of us to consider how we can achieve positive mental health in our daily lives, as well as support those that are affected by mental illness.
As Minister of Health, I encourage Canadians to learn about the relationship between mental health and good overall health, and how we can achieve both in our daily lives.
