October 29 to November 4, 2012
As Minister of Health, I am pleased to recognize Canadian Intensive Care Week which is when we formally acknowledge and appreciate the achievements and commitment of health care providers who care for the critically ill. This week is also designed to create awareness across the country about the importance of critical care expertise and the need to advance research and education in this area.
More than 100,000 Canadians are cared for in intensive care units each year and about 15% of all intensive care unit patients are children. Through the Canada Health Transfer, the Government of Canada is supporting efforts to help improve critical care for Canadians through long-term, predictable fundingto the provinces and territories.
Health Canada also provides funding for initiatives so health professionals are educated and ready to work in team environments. These teams of critical care health professionals work to ensure Canadians receive the best care possible.
Our government recognizes and appreciates the critical role of intensive care professionals in maintaining the health of Canadians. Every day, your expertise is called upon and through your exceptional work you are helping ensure Canadians of all ages with life-threatening conditions receive the care they need.
On behalf of the Government of Canada, I thank you for your tireless dedication to improving the health of Canadians.
