Aboriginal Awareness Week - May 21-24, 2013

Health Canada is one of 25 federal departments and agencies that participate in Aboriginal Awareness Week (AAW), which begins on May 21 and runs until May 24 this year. Introduced in 1992, AAW aims to increase awareness of Aboriginal culture among public servants.

Water - Mother Earth's gift is the focus of this year's Aboriginal Awareness Week activities, and will include a traditional water ceremony at Remic Rapids on May 24. In addition, a variety of Aboriginal events will be on display at Tunney's Pasture, Health Canada's headquarters in the National Capital Region. Activities include traditional and contemporary performances featuring First Nations, Metis and Inuit talent, traditional teachings and Aboriginal cuisine.

Providing quality health services for First Nations and Inuit communities is a key priority for the Government of Canada and Health Canada. Through its First Nations and Inuit Health Branch the Government provides health benefits and services to First Nations and Inuit across Canada.

I invite you to join me and my fellow public servants in celebrating Canada's rich Aboriginal heritage.
