National Aboriginal Day - June 21, 2013

June 21 is National Aboriginal Day, a day to celebrate Aboriginal people's rich contributions to Canada. Established in 1996 in collaboration with Aboriginal organizations, this annual event celebrates the unique heritage, traditions and cultures of Canada's First Nations, Inuit and Métis.

This day also marks the summer solstice - the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere - which carries traditional significance in many Aboriginal cultures. First Nations, Inuit and Métis groups showcase their own unique customs during this celebration. Communities and organizations across the country will be hosting activities marking the occasion. I encourage all Canadians to join in the festivities and learn more about the many distinct Aboriginal cultures that shape our country.

This year, Health Canada will participate in the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network's (APTN's) Aboriginal Day Live activities, being held at The Forks in Winnipeg. During this event we will share public health information of interest to First Nations and Inuit and will use this opportunity to gain more insight into their health information needs.

The Government of Canada has a long history of working alongside Aboriginal people to provide high quality and culturally relevant health care services. Health Canada is on a shared path to better health with Aboriginal partners and the provinces and territories. Together, we are striving to improve the overall health of First Nations, Inuit and Métis individuals, families and communities.

Please join me in celebrating and sharing in the pride of our country's Aboriginal heritage and ancestry!

Sincerely,

Leona Aglukkaq
Minister of Health
Government of Canada
