First Nations and Inuit Health

First Nations woman

First Nations and Inuit Health (FNIH) supports the efforts of First Nations and Inuit populations to attain a level of health comparable to that of other Canadians by providing them with an appropriate access to health care while promoting their autonomy and control over health services. In addition to offering ongoing support, FNIH offers a multitude of health programs and services to 52 communities distributed among 11 Aboriginal nations across the Quebec Region. Throughout transfer agreements, a large proportion of communities already manage a significant part of their health programs.

Here's an overview of the main programs and services provided to First Nations and Inuits:

Non-Insured Health Benefits

Young boys

Provides eligible members of First Nations and Inuit communities with access to a range of goods and services otherwise not covered by private or provincial health insurance plans. Goods and services include: vision care, medical equipment and supplies, medical transportation, drugs and crisis intervention counselling (including Indian Residential Schools Resolution Health Support Program).

Community-based Programs

Supports a series of community-based and community delivered programs, initiatives and strategies by encouraging and maintaining healthy lifestyles and reducing health risks in three areas : children and youth; chronic disease and injury prevention; and mental health and addictions.

Nursing

The nursing team manages the recruitment and retention of qualified nurses in communities. It also manages training and ongoing education of the health staff and supports the self-governance by First Nations and Inuits of their health programs. It also includes the Home and Community Care Program and the Maternal and Child Health Program.

Professional Services

Professional Services includes four sub-sections: Environmental Health (drinking / waste water, environmental health, transportation of hazardous material), Community Medicine (infectious disease control, orientation of health programs), Pharmacy (managing the drug distribution program for FNIH health institutions) and Dental Care.

Governance, Infrastructures and Operations

Governance, Infrastructures and Operations helps First Nations and Inuit communities carry out infrastructure projects and puts in place mechanisms that support health program and service delivery. It includes two sub-sectors: eHealth and Health Program Transfer.
