Lighters and Matches

Lighters and matches can be deadly in the hands of a child. Parents, grandparents, and caregivers should teach children about the importance of fire safety at an early age.

Safety Tips

If your clothes catch fire, STOP, DROP, and ROLL.
  • Keep lighters and matches out of the sight and reach of children.
  • Teach children about the dangers of lighters and matches.
  • Teach children that if their clothes catch on fire, to "Stop, Drop and Roll."
  • Make sure children never play with lighters and matches.
  • Make sure the lighter you buy is "child-resistant".
  • Do not leave a lighter outside. The weather can damage the plastic. If this happens, the fuel inside may leak out, or the lighter may break open.
