Health Canada is currently conducting a consultation on its proposal for a guideline regarding cadmium in children's jewellery. The purpose of this consultation document is to provide you with important information related to cadmium in children's jewellery and to solicit your input regarding Health Canada's proposal.

The objective of this report is to quantify the acute risk associated with a one-time ingestion of a cadmium-containing piece of jewellery by a small child, and to derive from that a protective level of cadmium in children's jewellery.  Health Canada is proposing a guideline for total cadmium concentration in children's jewellery of 130 ppm. The Department believes that jewellery containing cadmium below this level would not pose a risk of acute toxicity following ingestion, or of chronic toxicity from daily mouthing of jewellery in small children.
