Transition Strategies

Under the Pest Management Regulatory Agency's (PMRA) pesticide re-evaluation program, pesticide active ingredients and their end-use products are being reviewed on the basis of updated data and information to determine whether, and under what conditions, their continued registration is acceptable. The outcome of Pest Management Regulatory Agency's assessments under the re-evaluation program is a proposed regulatory decision on the acceptability of the active ingredient and its end-use products for continued registration. This proposed decision considers all aspects of the Canadian uses as they affect the human and environmental safety of the product. On the basis of the outcome of the assessment, the proposed decision could range from maintaining registration with no changes, to amending label instructions, to modifying existing maximum residue limits (MRLs), to eliminating or phasing-out certain uses or formulations, to loss of registration.

For certain critical uses of pesticides being phased-out through the Re-evaluation Program, the PMRA is committed to working with stakeholders toward a reasonable transition process. To this end, the PMRA is providing discussion forums for affected commodity groups. These will help encourage and facilitate the transition to safer alternatives by assisting commodity groups to gain access to lower risk pesticides and management practices.

PMRA is currently working with stakeholders on the following transition strategies:

  • Transition strategy for azinphos-methyl
    • cranberry
    • tree fruit
    • cherry
    • grape
  • Transition strategy for phorate and terbufos
    • wireworm
    • root worms
  • Transition strategy for diazinon
