Under the authority of the Pest Control Products Act, Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) has added a new use to the product labels of Centurion Emulsifiable Concentrate Post-Emergence Herbicide and Select Emulsifiable Concentrate Post-Emergence Herbicide, containing technical grade clethodim, for oilseed type oriental mustard. The specific uses approved in Canada are detailed on the labels of Centurion and Select (Pest Control Products Act Registration Numbers 27598 and 22625, respectively).
Corresponding maximum residue limits (MRLs) were proposed in the consultation document published on 10 July 2007, Proposed Maximum Residue Limit PMRL2007-05, Clethodim. The PMRA received no comments in response to this consultation.
To comply with Canada's international trade obligations, consultation on the proposed MRLs was also conducted internationally by notifying the World Trade Organization, as coordinated by the Standards Council of Canada. No comments were received as a result of the World Trade Organization consultation.
The following MRLs are legally in effect as of the publication date of this document and have either been revised or been added to the MRLs already established for clethodim.
Established and Revised Maximum Residue Limits for Clethodim
Common Chemical Name: Clethodim
Chemical Name of Substance: (E,E)-(±)-2-[1-[[-3-chloro-2-propenyl)oxy] imino]propyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl]-3- hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one, including metabolites containing the 2-cyclohex-1- enone moiety
Food Commodity / MRL parts per million (ppm)
Oriental mustard seeds* (oilseed type) / 0.05
Mustard seeds* (condiment type) / 0.4
* Both seed types were previously covered by the existing MRL of 0.4 ppm on "mustard seeds", which was established to support the labelled condiment type mustard use, but this was not specified. The commodity descriptor is revised to clearly indicate that the existing MRL applies only to condiment type mustard seeds and a new MRL is established for oilseed type oriental mustard seeds.
A complete list of all MRLs established in Canada can be found on the PMRA's MRL webpage.
