Under the authority of the Pest Control Products Act, Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) has registered the end-use product SmartFresh Technology for Tomatoes, containing 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), for use on tomatoes. The specific use approved in Canada is detailed on the label of SmartFresh Technology for Tomatoes, Pest Control Products Act Registration Number 28569.
A corresponding maximum residue limit (MRL) was proposed in the consultation document published on 10 July 2007, Proposed Maximum Residue Limit PMRL2007 06, 1-Methylcyclopropene. The PMRA received no comments in response to this consultation.
To comply with Canada's international trade obligations, consultation on the proposed MRL was also conducted internationally by notifying the World Trade Organization, as coordinated by the Standards Council of Canada. No comments were received as a result of the World Trade Organization consultation.
On 16 June 2008, the Food and Drugs Act was amended via Bill C-28 to allow pesticide MRLs to be established legally by being specified under the Pest Control Products Act, without having to be adopted by regulation under the Food and Drugs Act.
The following MRL is legally in effect as of the publication date of this document and is in addition to the MRL for apples already established for 1-MCP.
