The purpose of this Re-evaluation Note is to notify registrants, pesticide regulatory officials and the Canadian public of the current status of the re-evaluation of the heavy duty wood preservatives creosote, pentachlorophenol and chromated copper arsenate (CCA). These wood preservatives are being jointly re-evaluated by Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA).
On 16 April 2008, the USEPA released for public comment the revised health and environmental risk assessments for the heavy duty wood preservative uses of creosote, pentachlorophenol and CCA. The PMRA has been working closely with the USEPA on the re-evaluation of these wood preservatives. The USEPA consultation process includes releasing revised risk assessments for comment by stakeholders and the public prior to finalizing the risk assessments. These revised risk assessment documents outline health and environmental risk assessments, risk management measures and decisions on eligibility for re-registration. The assessments can be found at www.epa.gov/epahome/dockets.htm, Docket Numbers EPA-HQ-2003-0248, EPA-HQ-2004-0402 and EPA-HQ-2003-0250. As part of this joint re-evaluation, the PMRA directs all interested parties to this website to obtain the documents and direction for providing comments.
The PMRA invites and encourages the public and all interested parties to provide comments on the revised risk assessments. Comments should be provided to both the USEPA and PMRA. Following the comment period, the PMRA and USEPA will review all comments and make any appropriate revisions prior to making final regulatory decisions.
The PMRA will accept written comments up to 60 days from the date of publication of this document. Please copy all comments to Publications (contact information on the cover page of this document).
