The purpose of this document is to notify registrants, pesticide regulatory officials and the Canadian public of Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency's (PMRA) decision to initiate a special review, under section 17(1) of the Next link will take you to another Web site Pest Control Products Act, on sodium monofluoroacetate (Compound 1080) and associated products registered in Canada.

Compound 1080 is an animal toxicant used to control wolves and coyotes in the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Products containing this active ingredient are restricted-use products which are applied by Alberta and Saskatchewan personnel who are certified and trained in accordance with provincial policies and regulations. Two registered formulations exist as either tablets (used in meat baits) or collar solutions (used on livestock) for the control of predators.

A member of the public submitted a request to the PMRA to conduct a special review of Compound 1080 on the basis of risk concerns. While analyzing this request in the context of the information available for Compound 1080, the PMRA identified concerns with risk to non-target species when this product is used as a bait that warrant conducting a special review.

During this special review, the PMRA plans to revisit the current mitigation measures relating to potential exposure of non-target species when using baits in order to determine whether the environmental risks continue to be acceptable. Once the review has been completed, a proposed decision will be available for public consultation before a final decision is made.

Table 1 lists the products which are subject to this special review. Registrants who plan to discontinue products are asked to inform the PMRA as soon as possible.
