Description - Environmental Toxicology and Environmental Fate Testing Tiers

This figure is a decision making tree to help applicants determine the level of environmental testing that will be required for a microbial pest control agent.

There are four tiers to environmental testing. In tier 1, the applicant must decide if an effect was observed at the maximum challenge concentration. If no effect was observed, no additional testing is required. However, if an effect was observed, additional environmental testing is required. If the microbial pest control agent is non-indigenous to the area of intended use, the applicant must provide laboratory data and field studies before proceeding to tier 2. If the microbial pest control agent is indigenous to the area of intended use, the applicant can proceed to tier 2.

In tier 2, the applicant must decide if an effect was observed at the lower challenge concentration. If no effect was observed, no additional testing is required. However, if an effect was observed, additional environmental testing is required. If the microbial pest control agent is non-indigenous to the area of intended use, the applicant must provide life cycle and small-scale field studies under tiers 3 and 4. If the microbial pest control agent is indigenous to the area of intended use, the applicant must provide field studies and small-scale field studies under tiers 3 and 4.
