The strengthening of transparency, accountability and trust in the public service are key commitments of the Government of Canada. Health Canada priorities include working with an extensive range of partners within Canada and internationally, providing accurate information so Canadians can make informed decisions about their health.

Advisory Committees have been used by Health Canada to share and get feedback on complex policy and regulatory information and actions. HPFB has used external Advisory Committees to provide insight into the effect of policy or regulatory decisions on the Canadian public or industry, and to obtain valuable objective and specialized scientific opinion and advice. Alternatives to the status quo, such as non-regulatory approaches to managing health risks, have been generated through input provided by Advisory Committees.

The use of external advice within Health Canada's decision-making processes helps to achieve our mandate by encouraging and enabling input from diverse perspectives. Members are carefully selected to represent all relevant disciplines and expertise and different interests, where applicable. The responsibilities of Advisory Committees are outlined in the Terms of Reference specific to that Committee.
