Health Canada Stakeholders Conference on the
Reprocessing of Single Use Medical Devices
Thursday, June 9, 2005, Ottawa

On July 30, 2004, Health Canada issued an advisory letter to health care facilities entitled "Reprocessing of Reusable and Single-Use Medical Devices", stating that Health Canada is concerned that reusing single-use devices (SUDs) may be hazardous to patients. The letter can be found on the Therapeutic Products Directorate Website at:

http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/hpfb-dgpsa/tpd-dpt/letter_reprocess_e.html

Health Canada is currently consulting with Provincial and Territorial Ministries of Health and Canadian health care associations to develop a pan-Canadian strategy to manage the risks of reusing single-use medical devices (SUDs).

As part of this consultation, Health Canada established the Scientific Advisory Panel on Reprocessing of Medical Devices (SAP-RMD). The first meeting, held in Ottawa on February 10 and 11, 2005, focused on the feasability of reprocessing single-use devices. Information on the SAP-RMD can be found on the Therapeutic Products Directorate Website at:

http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/hpfb-dgpsa/tpd-dpt/sap_rmd_tor_e.html

On Thursday, June 9, 2005, Health Canada will hold a one-day meeting of stakeholders in Ottawa to discuss strategies for the risk management of reprocessing SUDs. The main objectives of the meeting are

  • To present the recommendations of the SAP-RMD on reuse of SUDs.

  • To present and obtain comments on Health Canada's Issue Analysis Summary on The Reuse of Single-Use Medical Devices

  • To hear the views of stakeholders on this issue.

All views expressed at the meeting, and written comments submitted to HC, will be considered in the development of Health Canada's position on the reuse of single-use medical devices.

The conference will be held:

Thursday, June 9, 2005
9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Travelodge Hotel 1376 Carling Avenue, Ottawa,
