Dear Sir or Madam,

Health Canada's Natural Health Products (NHP) Program Directorates (the Natural Health Products Directorate, the Marketed Health Products Directorate and the Health Products and Food Branch Inspectorate) are seeking nominations for Active Members to participate in the Natural Health Products Program Advisory Committee (NHP PAC). The NHP PAC provides views and feedback and may also provide advice and recommendations to the NHP Program related to natural health products intended for sale in Canada. The NHP PAC Terms of Reference provide more information on the committee.

The NHP PAC Terms of Reference allow for the appointment of up to 15 Active Members and for the establishment of Working Groups to which additional (non-committee) members may be appointed. Candidates that are not selected for membership to the NHP PAC may be considered for membership on a Working Group.

Health Canada strives to maintain a membership that reflects the diversity of natural health product stakeholder interests. Organizations may nominate up to a maximum of four candidates, representing any of the following groups, to become Active Members:

  • Consumer/Patient - Association
  • Industry - Association and Individual (Enterprise)
  • Retail - Association
  • Health Care Professional - Association
  • Research/Academia - Institution
  • Other - Regulatory Body

Your candidates for NHP PAC Active Member status should be selected based on their knowledge and expertise, and breadth of experience and familiarity with the natural health products regulatory framework. Consideration should be given to the fact that the focus of the NHP PAC is on natural health products intended for sale in Canada and the breadth of the NHP Program includes both pre-market and post-market regulatory activities.

In addition, Active Members should be able to represent their constituencies and be available to participate in at least two in-person meetings per year and to participate in associated NHP PAC activities such as Working Groups which include regular teleconference meetings.

It is also important to note that, as a condition of appointment to the NHP PAC, potential members must obtain enhanced reliability security clearance, complete a declaration of affiliations and interests, and sign a confidentiality agreement and an agreement to allow a biographical sketch and a summary of their declaration of affiliations and interests to be posted to the Health Canada website.

Active Members will be appointed for a 2- or 3-year term and serve on a voluntary basis. In keeping with the Treasury Board's Policy on Legal Assistance and Indemnification, members are eligible for protection against personal liability while acting within the mandate of the NHP PAC and are eligible to be reimbursed for certain travel expenses incurred as a result of their active membership, in accordance with the Treasury Board's Travel Directive and Hospitality Policy.

Applications for the NHP PAC nomination process should be completed and submitted as per the Guidelines for Nomination no later than June 17, 2010.

On behalf of the NHP Program Directorates, your consideration and contribution to this important process is greatly appreciated.

Yours sincerely,

Michelle Boudreau
Director General
Natural Health Products Directorate
