Since the Natural Health Products Regulations were introduced in 2004, a process has been ongoing to license and regulate natural health products, a large number of which were already on the market. These products range from simple to complex formulations and many new licence applications are received daily.
The Natural Health Products (Unprocessed Product Licence Applications) Regulations allow for the legal sale of a category of products for which Health Canada has not yet issued a product licence but has completed an initial assessment to ensure that information supporting the safety, quality and efficacy of the product has been provided, and that specific safety criteria have been met.
This allows certain natural health products (NHPs) to continue to be sold in Canada while they complete the full licensing process.
