Nitrogen dioxide is a gas that is produced by cars and outdoor smokestacks, and by indoor fuel-burning appliances like gas stoves. It irritates the lungs but you can minimize its impact with proper ventilation.
What is Nitrogen Dioxide?
Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a gas that can be emitted indoors by combustion appliances like gas stoves. NO2 can also enter the home from outdoor sources such as cars.
What Are the Health Risks?
Nitrogen dioxide irritates the lungs. It can decrease lung function and increase susceptibility to allergens for people with asthma. Prolonged exposure to low levels of nitrogen dioxide has been found to increase the risk of respiratory symptoms such as coughing and wheezing.
How Do I Prevent Exposure to Nitrogen Dioxide?
- Exhaust Fan! The main source of nitrogen dioxide in homes comes from gas stoves. If you have one, make sure that it is equipped with a hood that it is properly vented to the outside.
- Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance! All combustion appliances, including furnaces, stoves and water heaters should be inspected by a qualified professional at least once a year. This is especially important for gas-burning appliances since leaks from gas appliances are more difficult to detect than those from oil-burning appliances.
