Manganese is an essential nutrient, but at sufficiently high levels of exposure it can affect the functioning of the central nervous system. Health Canada has published a draft science assessment document entitled Human Health Risk Assessment for Inhaled Manganese. This document provides a detailed technical review of the science of the health effects of manganese, and includes a new health-based reference concentration for manganese in air.
