Radiological Impact

In the Radiological Impact Section we conduct research on the following topics:

  • The transport of radioactivity through environmental pathways
  • The uptake of radioactive substances by the human body
  • The health effects of ionizing radiation

We also carry out assessments of situations where ionizing radiation may have an impact on the general public. This includes major projects, such as the construction of nuclear facilities, which are assessed under the Next link will take you to another Web site Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. An important component of our work is the setting of guidelines for radioactivity in food and drinking water and for levels of radon gas in homes and public buildings. We provide advice on radiological matters to other government departments and international organizations. Our staff are available to answer your questions and concerns about radiation in the environment.
