Preparing for the GHS Implementation in Canada

The implementation of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) for workplace chemicals in Canada will not change the current roles and responsibilities for suppliers, employers and workers in the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS). The WHMIS requirements established under the Hazardous Products Act and associated Controlled Products Regulations would be amended to incorporate the new GHS harmonized criteria for hazard classification and requirements for safety data sheets and labels.

  • Suppliers, importers and producers would continue to:
    • Classify hazardous products; and,
    • Prepare labels and safety data sheets and provide these to customers.
  • Employers would continue to:
    • Educate and train workers on the hazards and safe use of products in the workplace;
    • Ensure that hazardous materials are properly labelled;
    • Prepare workplace labels and safety data sheets (as necessary);
    • Provide access for workers to up-to-date safety data sheets; and,
    • Ensure appropriate control measures are in place to protect the health and safety of workers.
  • Workers would still:
    • Participate in WHMIS and chemical safety training programs;
    • Take necessary steps to protect themselves and their coworkers; and,
    • Participate in identifying and controlling hazards.
