Research Funding
The Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation Program recently funded five health studies to be completed by 2007. Topics and principal investigators include:
- Effects of climate change on the geographic distribution of blacklegged ticks and their associated pathogens in Canada: The role of migratory birds. PI Dr. Nicholas Ogden, Université de Montréal
- Impacts of climate variability/change on marine toxic algal blooms and shellfish toxicity. PI Dr. Michel Starr, Department of Fisheries and Oceans
- Integration of Psychosocial Attributes into Community Risk Management and Emergency Preparedness Programs for Impacts Mitigation and Adaptation to Severe Weather Trends. PI Dr. Emdad Haque, University of Manitoba
- Identification des secteurs vulnérables à la chaleur intense dans une métropole Canadienne en vue d'interventions et d'études ciblées en santé publique. PI Dr. Tom Kosatsky, McGill University
- Climate Change Impacts on Presentation Patterns at Canadian Hospitals. PI Dr.Gordon McBean, Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction
Funding for Health Policy Research on Climate Change Policies and Programs
Proposals for two RFAs have been received by Health Canada's Health Policy Research Program for funding in the amount of $2.3 million dollars. Successful candidates will be announced in the new year.
