Creosote-impregnated Waste Materials - PSL1
4.0 Recommendations for Research and Evaluation
The available information was sufficient to conduct an assessment of CIWM originating from creosote-contaminated sites. In order to do an assessment of whether CIWM from creosote waste products are "toxic", the following studies are required.
- Leaching studies would enable a determination of the specific components of creosote from creosote waste products (i.e., railroad ties and marine pilings), their rates of loss, and their bioavailability. This research is considered to be of medium priority.
- Bioassay tests on leachates from creosote waste products would enable a determination of their toxicity to a standard set of bioassay organisms. This research is considered to be of medium priority.
