Report on: Measurement of Cellular Base-station Emissions Using a Newly Developed RF Field Mapping System*

Abstract

Measurements of ground level emissions, representative of human exposures, near cellular base-station installations are presented. Although the areas selected for measurement are all in the Regional Municipality of Ottawa, Canada, they are probably representative of exposure levels elsewhere in urban environments in Canada.

The newly developed instrument used to acquire the data is described briefly and power density maps of the areas surveyed are given. The equipment is capable of measuring the combined power density in all bands of frequencies used by cellular service providers along with the GPS-derived coordinates of the measurement location. Due to its lightweight and portability, the equipment could be mounted on a vehicle and measurements taken while driving. Results show that worst-case exposure levels are typically thousands of times below the recommended exposure limits in Health Canada's Safety Code 6.
