Description - Figure 1: The Multi-Barrier Approach

Figure 1 presents an image of the elements of the multi-barrier approach to safe drinking water as a series of oval rings which lead to a centre core which is the objective of clean, safe, reliable drinking water.

The outer oval ring contains the necessary enabling elements for the oversight of safe drinking water, including; legislative and policy frameworks, public involvement and awareness, guidelines, standards and objectives as well as research, science and technology. Moving inward, the outer ring informs and supports the second oval ring which depicts the ongoing activities of monitoring and management applied to the activities within the third or innermost ring, which includes; source water protection, drinking water treatment and the drinking water distribution system. Finally, at the centre of the figure is the core objective of clean, safe, reliable drinking water.
