There are two different portals in this picture (one black, and the other white) and normally they would not be placed in such close proximity. This photograph illustrates the sensitivity of the HML's portal monitors and shows the distance at which the portal monitor would alarm if a person (in the red ellipse) was contaminated with the amount of activity (given in SI and imperial units). The distance at which the portal would alarm is also shown: 28 metres (92 feet).
