Cooperation With Romania

Training of staff

The Human Monitoring Laboratory (HML) trained two Romanian scientists in 1991. The emphasis was on lung counting using the HML's phoswich based system and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) torso phantom containing natural uranium, 93% enriched uranium and americium-241 lungs sets. The system was replaced by a germanium based system in 1996.

An interesting collaboration resulted from one of the training periods. The results of this work have been published in the open literature. G.H. Kramer and M.A. Puscalau. Chest Wall Thickness Measurements for Enriched Uranium: An Alternative Approach. Health Physics 66, 573-576; 1994.
