Food and Nutrition


Educators and health professionals are important players in helping Canadians use the nutrition information on food labels to make informed food choices. This information, combined with recommendations from Canada's Food Guide, are tools to help support a healthy lifestyle.

Research shows that consumers are using nutrition labelling information to make food choices. However, they are also seeking more information to better understand and use the Nutrition Facts table, specifically the amount of food and the % Daily Value (% DV).

How do you use the % DV?

Use these steps to help consumers better understand how to use the Nutrition Facts table:

  • Step 1: Look at the amount of food.
  • Step 2: Read the % Daily Value.
  • Step 3: Choose foods that are better for you.

The following values provide guidance for consumers to help them choose foods with a little or a lot of the nutrients that are important for their health.

% Daily Value Meter

5% DV or less is a little
15% DV or more is a lot
This applies to all nutrients.

The % Daily Value is designed to be used primarily to compare the nutrient content of different food products and to assess the relative contribution of a food to a healthy eating pattern. It has not been designed for planning individual diets.

Did you know?

Research shows that threshold values are required to help Canadians understand what is "a little" and what is "a lot" of a nutrient.

The 5% DV and 15% DV values are derived from the Food and Drug Regulations for nutrient content claims. They apply to all nutrients.
