Infant Feeding

Breastfeeding is the normal and unequalled method of feeding infants. Health Canada promotes breastfeeding - exclusively for the first six months, and sustained for up to two years or longer with appropriate complementary feeding - for the nutrition, immunologic protection, growth, and development of infants and toddlers.

Infant Feeding Update

Health Canada is undertaking a joint process with the Canadian Paediatric Society, Dietitians of Canada and Breastfeeding Committee for Canada to review and update its evidence-informed infant feeding recommendations for health professionals in Canada (Nutrition for Healthy Term Infants). The first phase of the project addressing the recommendations for feeding infants from birth to six months of age, is now complete.

The second phase of the project will review and update nutrition recommendations for infants and young children from six months to two years of age.á The project is supported by an Infant Feeding Expert Advisory Group. Health Canada will also seek valuable input from stakeholders through an open consultation process.
