The Compendium of Analytical Methods

The purpose of this manual is to provide a ready reference of the methods used by the Health Products and Food Branch (HPFB) of Health Canada:

  1. to determine compliance of the food industry with standards and guidelines relative to microbiological and extraneous material in foods;
  2. to assess the quality of foods in general with respect to their microbiological or extraneous material content;
  3. in support of foodborne disease investigation;

These analytical methods for the microbiological safety and general cleanliness of foods have been prepared by the Evaluation Division, Bureau of Microbiological Hazards, Food Directorate, Health Products and Food Branch, Health Canada.

To obtain a method/document, select the appropriate link from the Compendium website and an email request will open with the subject line and address already populated. Please do not add or alter any text prior to sending the request. Health Canada’s publications office will respond to the request. A PDF format of the document requested will be sent electronically to the originating email address. Please note that requests can only be fulfilled during business hours Monday to Friday (Eastern Time).
