INTRODUCTION

The following glossary is provided as a handy reference for agars, broths and other reagents used in The Compendium of Analytical Methods. It is the responsibility of the analyst or laboratory supervisor to ensure the efficacy of media prepared from commercially available products or made from scratch using the formulas below or variations of these formulas.

It is the responsibility of the analyst or laboratory supervisor to ensure that proper precautions are taken when handling the chemical components of media, including the commercially prepared product, to avoid potential injury due to inhalation, contact with skin and eyes, as well as effects of long term exposure.

Notes (GENERAL):

  1. pH: Unless otherwise indicated, pH determinations are performed at 25°C prior to heating the media.

  2. Distilled water: The term ' distilled water' has been used in the formulas described below for simplicity and deNotes the use of reagent-grade water in general. Water purification systems will vary between laboratories. It is the responsibility of each laboratory to ensure the quality of their reagent water.

  3. Media Formulas: Media formulas and the pH of the reconstituted product mary vary slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer, as individual components names may vary or be substituted for similar components (i.e. different protein formulations). In some cases additional components may be included in the formula or others substracted. If the method or glossary indicates that commercial products can be used, then it up to the Laboratory Supervisor to ensure that the formula used performs according to the method. The pH of reconstituted commercial products must conform to that stated by the manufacturer.
