Proposed CFIA Programs for Inspecting Irradiated Poultry, Ground Beef, Shrimp and Mangoes - Irradiation of Poultry, Ground Beef and Shrimp and Mangoes

If allowed through regulation, the CFIA will verify that:
  • irradiation is used strictly in accordance with the standards set out in the Food and Drug Regulations
  • irradiation is part of a comprehensive approach to food safety and wholesomeness
  • irradiated products are properly labelled

To assure compliance with the Food and Drug Regulations

Irradiation of Poultry, Ground Beef and Shrimp

  • Irradiation kills pathogens & spoilage organisms
  • reducing the risk of foodborne illness from treated foods; and
  • extending the shelflife of treated foods

Irradiation of Mangoes

Irradiation is used to reduce insect infestation and extend shelf-life

Current Labelling Requirements

Food advertisements for irradiated foods must clearly reveal that they have been irradiated

Current Labelling Requirements

  • Irradiated prepackaged foods must carry a statement, "treated with radiation", "treated by irradiation", or "irradiated"
  • Must display the Radura symbol
  • Shipping container, "Do not irradiate again", if maximum permitted absorbed dose

Current Labelling Requirements

  • If not prepackaged, information must appear on signage in close proximity
  • Signs accompanying bulk displays of irradiated foods must carry the same identification as that required on package labels.

Current Labelling Requirements

  • If an irradiated food is used as an ingredient of another food, it must be declared as being "irradiated" in the list of ingredients only if it constitute 10 % or more of the final food
