Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Should vegetables and fruits be soaked?

A: Soaking fruits and vegetables in water is not recommended because of the potential for cross-contamination. If you choose to soak fresh fruits and vegetables, make sure your sink is clean. Wash the produce well under running water afterwards and dry with a clean towel.

Q: Should vegetable and fruit cleansers or food wash products be used?

A: Washing fruits and vegetables with food wash products or using commercial food cleansers is not recommended since they do not completely remove or kill microbes, potentially present on the produce. Detergent or soap residues can remain on the produce. Washing produce with tap water is usually adequate.

Q: Do bagged leafy greens have to be washed prior to eating?

A: Fresh pre-cut, bagged produce have already been washed before processing and can be consumed without further washing. As an extra measure of caution, produce can be washed again before being used. Pre-cut or pre-washed produce in open bags or containers should always be washed before using. Do not use bagged produce after their "best before" date.

Q: Should I feed my children sprouts?

A: Children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune system are advised not to eat raw sprouts such as bean, alfalfa, or radish sprouts, as they can be at a higher risk of developing serious foodborne illness.

Q: How do I know if the fruit juice product that I'm buying is pasteurized?

A: Most of the juices sold in Canada are pasteurized or otherwise treated to kill harmful microorganisms. Some juice that is sold in refrigerated display cases or at the produce section of the store may indicate on their labels that they are pasteurized. If there is no indication on the label, you can ask your retailer or local producer, or phone the information number on the product label. The untreated juice products should be kept in the refrigerated section of the store or surrounded by ice.

Q: What is organic produce?

A: Organic produce is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, sewage sludge or human waste.
