The Canadian Handbook on Health Impact Assessment was originally published in 1998 by the Federal/Provincial/Territorial Committee on Environmental and Occupational Health and subsequently updated in 2000 and 2004. This Handbook has four volumes:
- Volume 1: The Basics - Introduces the concepts of health impact assessment and presents the rationale for the necessary presence of the health sector in the area of environmental assessment, as well as a summary of current practices in Canada and other countries.
- Volume 2: Approaches and Decision-Making - Presents criteria for conducting a Health Impact Assessment within the context of an environmental assessment and provides examples of impacts as a reference for health professionals, based on principles of sustainable development.
- Volume 3: The Multidisciplinary Team - Provides a summary of stakeholder values, social impact assessment, economic evaluation, indigenous health impact assessment, environmental epidemiology, occupational health and safety, and contaminants in foods.
- Volume 4: Health Impacts by Industry Sector - Outlines the environmental and health impacts of implementing development projects in each of Canada's major economic sectors.
The Handbook examines the need and the procedures necessary to incorporate the assessment of human health effects in an impact assessment process, and intends to assist individuals with health knowledge in the medical fields, social sciences and government/industry health experts to participate in the impact assessment process.
