Application Guidelines:

Value of Grant:

Each successful proposal may receive one-time grants of up to $30,000. Only one grant can be issued to an organization per year. For the fiscal year 2007-2008, there are ten grants available.

Deadlines:

The completed application form is due on Thursday, July 12, 2007 at 4:00 p.m. EST. Applications post-marked by the deadline will be accepted.

Who can Apply:

Non-profit organizations and institutions (i.e. non-governmental, academic) whose mandates are consistent with departmental objectives and current Health Canada policy and priorities. Organizations must also possess demonstrated experience and knowledge in programmatic or policy responses to HIV/AIDS, both domestically and internationally.

Programme Objectives:

The goal of the Global Engagement Component of the Federal Initiative to Address HIV/AIDS in Canada is to:

Contribute a strong health sector response to the global effort to reduce the spread of HIV, and to mitigate the impact of the disease.

In support of this goal, the objectives of the HIV/AIDS Global Engagement Grants Programme are to:

  • Increase Canada's contribution of technical and policy expertise to the global response to HIV/AIDS;
  • Promote learning between the domestic and global responses to HIV/AIDS.

Possible Funding Areas:

  • Institutional capacity-building initiatives to strengthen civil society involvement in the global HIV/AIDS response.
  • Design and implementation of workshops or consultations that foster linkages and learning between Canadian and international or Southern-based organizations engaged in the common fight against the spread of HIV.
  • Development and dissemination of policy or programmatic learning tools; print or electronic publications on the global HIV/AIDS response.
  • Development or enhancement of networking processes that permit greater access to international and Canadian best practice in the field of HIV/AIDS.

How Applications are Evaluated:

The following criteria will be used to evaluate applications:

Relevance:

  • How does the project strengthen the capacity of Canadians or Canadian organizations to engage more effectively in the global HIV/AIDS response, at either the policy or programmatic level?
  • How does the project contribute to the documentation and dissemination of evidence-based knowledge and expertise to inform the global HIV/AIDS response?

Partnerships:

  • Does the project strengthen collaboration and/or develop new partnerships between Canadian and international or Southern-based organizations in the global response to HIV/AIDS?
  • Does the project contribute to capacity-building of partnering organizations?
  • Does the project engage communities in countries which face a high HIV prevalence and / or incidence of new infections?

Effectiveness:

  • Does the project represent a reasonable use of resources for the expected results?
  • Are the suggested outcomes feasible given the proposed approach and resources available?

Reporting Requirements:

  • All grant recipients will be required to submit a final project report by March 31, 2008, outlining the results of the project activity.
  • Other deliverables may be required depending on the nature of the grant agreement and the activities undertaken.
  • Project reports must include age and sex-disaggregated data where relevant.

Acknowledgement of Health Canada support:

  • All grant recipients will be required to acknowledge support from Health Canada in all project-related publications or statements.
